Industry Canada’s Connecting Canadians Initiative aims to make Canada the most Internet-connected nation in the world. The Community Access Program (CAP) was initiated in 1994 and is a cornerstone of the Connecting Canadians Initiative. We are currently ranked 19th in the world with over 74% of our population being internet users. We may have a high percentage of people who use the internet, but how many of them know how to use it properly? This is where CAP-YI comes in.
Another component of CAP is the CAP Youth Initiative which encourages youth to get involved at CAP sites in teaching individual organizations and small businesses about the Internet and related information technologies, as well as how to use them more effectively. This provides youth with job experience that may help them when they enter the workforce.
The formal objectives of CAP are to:
![]() Many CAP sites are opening their technology centers and computer labs to the community. Often, they offer courses in computer and other technology skills that are increasingly needed by all members of the community. A citizen’s ability to take advantage of these opportunities depends on how well that individual and the surrounding community weaves standard and innovative uses of new technologies into the fabric of community life. The Community Access Program works hard to establish initiatives that focus on community, social, environmental and economic development while creating awareness.
